Sander began training and working at Castle Craig Hospital in January 2013 and gained the Diploma in Addictions Counselling from Castle Craig Hospital later that same year. Sander practices an integrative approach to treatment and works as a specialist therapist in both the Intensive Treatment and Extended Care unit.

Prior to his commencement at Castle Craig Hospital, Sander worked as a junior counsellor in an addiction treatment facility in The Netherlands and completed undergraduate study in applied psychology. He also undertook a nine-month full-time placement in a therapeutic community-based treatment centre for drug and alcohol addiction in Cape Town, South-Africa in 2010. In 2014 Sander obtained the IC&RC qualification and gained international accreditation in alcohol and drug counselling (ICADC).

Most recently, Sander has completed a Master’s Degree in Counselling and Psychotherapy with Distinction at The University of Edinburgh, School of Health in Social Science, where he conducted comprehensive empirical research on the psychological effects of and the recovery process from childhood trauma and chemical dependency. 

Sander specialises in working with a range of mental health conditions which co-occur with addiction, including PTSD, personality problems, general anxiety and depression. He is professionally trained in a Person-Centred and Psychodynamic approach to therapy and fully conversant with CBT, RET, family therapy, pre-therapy (motivational interviewing) and brief therapy. In addition, he is highly experienced in working with patients from diverse social and cultural backgrounds.

Before starting his career in counselling and psychotherapy Sander gained a Bachelor of Business Administration at the University of Amsterdam and held various marketing and sales management positions at leading corporations in the Dutch media industry.
