Consultant Psychiatrist, External advisor, FRCPsych

Dr Jim Craig has a Fellowship in Psychiatry and has been one of Castle Craig's Consultant Psychiatrists since 2005.

He says that he has found his work at Castle Craig eye-opening and engrossing. “It highlights how much people with dependency problems with the right support can do to tackle these terrible illnesses.” He particularly appreciates being able to stay in touch with patients on a one-to-one basis.

Background

Dr Craig studied Medicine and a Post Graduate Degree in Psychiatry at Edinburgh University, which included clinical electives in New York.

From 1973 to 2005 he worked in General Adult Psychiatry at Rosslynlee Hospital, Midlothian, Scotland (from 1980-2005 as a Consultant). In addition to this from 2000-2005 he held the post of Associate Medical Director in Clinical Effectiveness at Lothian Primary Care Trust. Here he had responsibility for Clinical Governance in Lothian Primary Care NHS Trust as Associate Medical Director (Clinical Excellence). His research for his postgraduate research degree (M.Phil.) was in ‘Day Hospitals with particular reference to Rosslynlee Hospital’.

After retiring from the NHS in 2005 he has continued his professional career by working as a locum Consultant Psychiatrist at Castle Craig Hospital and as a member of the Mental Welfare Commission for Scotland, Mental Health Tribunals Scotland and the Pensions Appeals Tribunal for Scotland (for ex-Service people with service-related disablement). He has also found time to write a book on his old Hospital, “Up By” – A History of Rosslynlee Hospital.

Outside work his interests include reading, walking his dog, fish suppers and being with his family.
